Triund Trek

The Triund Trek is a classic and accessible Himalayan hike in the Dhauladhar Range, offering a perfect introduction to mountain trekking. This relatively short trail rewards trekkers with breathtaking, panoramic views of the snow-capped Dhauladhar peaks on one side and the lush Kangra Valley on the other. Well-suited for beginners, families, and those with limited time, it can be completed as a scenic day hike or a memorable overnight camping experience under the stars.

The following outlines a standard 2-day, 1-night itinerary. Many trekkers also complete it as a long day hike.

Day 1: McLeod Ganj to Triund Top (4-5 hours)
The trek begins from McLeod Ganj. Most groups take a short taxi ride to the trailhead at Gallu Devi Temple to save time and energy. From here, a well-defined path ascends through mixed forests of oak, rhododendron, and deodar. You will pass small tea stalls and the famous “Magic View” cafe offering valley views. The final stretch, known as the “22 curves,” involves a steeper, zig-zag climb to the meadow at Triund Top. Set up camp, enjoy a sunset over the Dhauladhar range, and spend the night in tents.

Day 2: Triund to McLeod Ganj (3-4 hours)
Wake up early for a spectacular sunrise illuminating the mountain peaks. After breakfast, begin the descent back to Gallu Devi Temple via the same trail, a much quicker journey downhill. From the temple, you can take a taxi or walk back to McLeod Ganj, concluding the trek

Special Terms & Notes for Participants

Fitness and Prerequisites
This trek is graded Easy to Moderate and is considered an excellent first Himalayan trek for beginners. It requires a reasonable level of general fitness. No prior technical trekking experience is necessary, but being able to walk 4-5 hours on an uphill trail with a light backpack is expected.

Route Options and Logistics

There are two common starting points: the popular and slightly easier route from Gallu Devi Temple, and the steeper, less crowded route from Bhagsu Nag near the waterfall.
An entry fee is now charged at the Gallu Devi Temple checkpoint (approximately 100-200 INR).
Mobile network is unreliable on the trail; the last reliable connectivity and ATM are in McLeod Ganj.

Best Time to Visit
The ideal windows are Spring (March-June) for pleasant weather and blooming flowers, and Autumn (September-November) for clear skies and post-monsoon greenery.

Monsoon (July-August): The trail can be slippery, rainy, and prone to landslides. Trekking is not generally recommended.
Winter (December-February): The trail is accessible but cold, with chances of snow. It is more challenging and requires proper winter gear and possibly a guide.

Safety and Preparation

Start your trek early in the morning (by 7:30-8:00 AM) to avoid afternoon clouds and enjoy the best views.
Weather in the mountains can change rapidly; carry rain protection and warm layers regardless of the season.
The trail is rocky in sections. Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip are essential.
Stay hydrated, carry energy snacks, and ascend at your own pace to manage the altitude.

Environmental and Cultural Responsibility

Triund is a popular and sometimes crowded trail, especially on weekends. For a more peaceful experience, consider trekking on a weekday.
Adhere to “Leave No Trace” principles. Carry back all your waste, including biodegradable items, to help preserve the meadow’s beauty.
The trail is shared with local shepherds and their animals; give them the right of way.
