The Gaumukh Trek is a spiritually profound journey to the source of the sacred Ganges River, emerging from the Gangotri Glacier’s icy snout. This transformative pilgrimage combines high-altitude trekking, deep religious significance, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. Starting from the holy town of Gangotri, the trail follows the roaring Bhagirathi River through ancient forests and rugged valleys to the glacier terminus at 4,000 meters, offering close encounters with some of India’s most revered peaks.

Day 1: Arrival in Uttarkashi | Acclimatization & Temple Visit
- Arrive at Uttarkashi base or direct transfer from Dehradun.
- Visit the historic Vishwanath Temple and Nehru Mountaineering Institute (if time permits).
- Trek briefing, gear check, and cultural orientation on local customs.
- Overnight in hotel/guesthouse.
Day 2: Uttarkashi to Gangotri (3,048m) | Scenic Drive
- Drive through Bhagirathi Valley (approx. 5-6 hours).
- Stop at picturesque villages like Harsil en route.
- Arrive at Gangotri, visit the sacred Gangotri Temple.
- Evening rituals at the temple ghats.
- Overnight in guesthouse.
Day 3: Gangotri to Bhojbasa (3,800m) | Trek Begins
- Morning prayers at Gangotri Temple.
- Begin trek along the Bhagirathi River (14 km, 6-7 hours).
- Trail passes through chir pine and deodar forests.
- Arrive at Bhojbasa, a scenic meadow with ashrams and campsites.
- First views of Bhagirathi peaks.
- Overnight in tents/ashram accommodation.
Day 4: Bhojbasa to Gaumukh (4,000m) & Return to Bhojbasa
- Early morning trek to Gaumukh (4 km, 2-3 hours).
- Witness the Ganges emerging from the glacier’s icy cave.
- Perform rituals (if desired) at this sacred site.
- Optional short exploration of the glacier moraine.
- Return to Bhojbasa for overnight stay.
- Overnight in tents/ashram.
Day 5: Bhojbasa to Gangotri | Return Trek
- After breakfast, begin descent to Gangotri (14 km, 5-6 hours).
- Opportunity for final temple visit or ritual bath.
- Evening at leisure in Gangotri town.
- Overnight in guesthouse.
Day 6: Gangotri to Uttarkashi/Dehradun | Departure
- Morning drive back to Uttarkashi or continue to Dehradun.
- Trip concludes upon arrival.
- Optional extension to visit other Char Dham sites.

Gaumukh is one of Hinduism’s holiest sites. Respectful conduct is mandatory.
The entire region is vegetarian and alcohol-free. Participants must respect these norms.
Photography restrictions may apply near temples and ritual sites.
Traditional rituals (puja, havan) can be arranged with prior notice.

Altitude & Fitness Requirements

This trek involves gradual altitude gain to 4,000m. Proper acclimatization is built in.
Participants should have good cardiovascular fitness and prior trekking experience.
Medical conditions must be disclosed during booking.
The trail involves rocky sections and moraine walking; sturdy footwear is essential.

Weather & Seasonal Considerations

Best conditions: May-June (spring) and September-October (post-monsoon).
Monsoon (July-August) brings landslides and trail disruptions.
Winter treks (limited) require special preparation and equipment.
Weather changes rapidly; be prepared for cold temperatures even in summer.

50% advance payment required for booking confirmation.
Cancellation 30+ days before departure: 75% refund.
Cancellation 15-30 days before departure: 50% refund.
Cancellation less than 15 days before departure: No refund.

Environmental Responsibility

Gaumukh is an ecologically fragile glacial region. Strict “Leave No Trace” principles apply.
Plastic is banned in Gangotri National Park. Carry reusable water bottles.
All non-biodegradable waste must be carried back to Gangotri.
Respect wildlife; this is a protected national park area.

Essential Packing List

Must Carry: Sturdy waterproof trekking boots, layered clothing (including down jacket), rain gear, sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, personal water bottle.
For Rituals: Traditional clothes if planning puja (optional).
Recommended: Trekking poles, headlamp, personal medications, camera.

AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) awareness is crucial; guides are trained in recognition.
