The following is a standard 11-day itinerary based on comprehensive tour packages.
Day 1: Arrival in Manali
Arrive in Manali, a popular hill station in the Kullu Valley. Check into your hotel and use the day for acclimatization. You may explore local sights like the Hadimba Temple, Vashisht hot springs, or the Mall Road.
Day 2: Manali to Jispa via Atal Tunnel
After breakfast, depart from Manali. Drive through the Solang Valley and enter the 9.02-km-long Atal Tunnel, a modern marvel that serves as a gateway to the Lahaul Valley. The landscape transforms from lush green to stark, rugged mountains. Continue to Jispa alongside the Bhaga River for an overnight stay, aiding acclimatization.
Day 3: Jispa to Padum (Zanskar Valley) via Shinku La
Embark on one of the journey’s most adventurous legs. Drive to Darcha and begin the climb to the Shinku La (Shingo La) pass (5,091m), the border between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. Descend into the remote Zanskar Valley, passing villages like Kurgiakh and Purne. Arrive at Padum, the administrative center of Zanskar, for your overnight stay.
Day 4: Zanskar Valley Sightseeing
Explore the cultural heart of Zanskar. Visit ancient and significant monasteries such as Karsha Monastery (one of the largest), Stongdey Monastery, and Sani Gompa. Interact with locals in Padum town and immerse yourself in the serene, traditional Buddhist culture of the valley.
Day 5: Padum to Leh via Kargil-Leh Highway
Depart Zanskar and drive to Leh. The route joins the Kargil-Leh highway at Nimmu, the scenic confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers. En route, visit the gravity-defying Magnetic Hill and the revered Gurudwara Pathar Sahib. Arrive in Leh by evening for check-in and rest.
Day 6: Leh Local Sightseeing & Acclimatization
A crucial day for acclimatization to Leh’s altitude (3,500m). Explore the city’s historical and cultural sites: the Hall of Fame museum, Spituk Monastery, the nine-story Leh Palace, and the white-domed Shanti Stupa offering panoramic views. The evening is free to explore the local market.
Day 7: Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La
After an early breakfast, drive to Nubra Valley. The journey climbs to Khardung La Pass (5,602m), often billed as one of the world’s highest motorable roads. Descend into Nubra, known as the “Valley of Flowers.” Visit Diskit Monastery with its giant Maitreya Buddha statue and the sand dunes of Hunder, where you can see double-humped Bactrian camels. Overnight at a camp or hotel.
Day 8: Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake
Depart Nubra for the mesmerizing Pangong Lake. The drive via the Shyok River valley is incredibly scenic. Upon arrival, be captivated by the lake’s stunning shades of blue, which change throughout the day. The lake, situated at about 4,250 meters, is a highlight of any Ladakh journey. Overnight in comfortable camps by the lakeshore.
Day 9: Pangong Lake to Leh via Chang La
Enjoy a final morning by Pangong Lake. Later, drive back to Leh, crossing the high Chang La Pass (approx. 5,360m). If time permits, you can visit Shey Palace and Thiksey Monastery on the way. Overnight in Leh.
Day 10: Leh to Sarchu/Jispa (Return Journey)
Begin the return journey towards Manali. Drive back over the Ladakh plateau, crossing passes like Taglang La (5,328m) and traversing the More Plains. Overnight at a camp in Sarchu or continue to Jispa.
Day 11: Sarchu/Jispa to Manali & Departure
Complete the drive back to Manali, recrossing Baralacha La and the Atal Tunnel. Upon arrival in Manali, the tour concludes. You will be dropped at the bus stand or your preferred location for your onward journey.
