A standard 7-day itinerary is detailed below. Many operators include a buffer day for weather or acclimatization.
Day 1: Arrival and Acclimatization in Manali
Arrive in Manali (2,000m). The day is for rest and light acclimatization. Many groups conduct an equipment check and a briefing. Optional sightseeing may include a visit to Hadimba Temple or Vashisht hot springs.
Day 2: Manali to Dhundi (Drive) and Trek to Bakarthach
Drive from Manali to Dhundi (approx. 21 km, 1.5 hours). The trek begins here, following the Beas River through forests to reach the scenic meadow campsite at Bakarthach (3,300m). The trek is relatively easy and takes about 3 hours.
Day 3: Bakarthach to Lady Leg (Advanced Base Camp)
A steeper climb of about 3-4 hours leads to the Advanced Base Camp at Lady Leg (approx. 3,900m). This day offers the first clear views of Friendship Peak and surrounding giants. The afternoon is often dedicated to initial training on using mountaineering gear.
Day 4: Acclimatization, Training, and Load Ferry to Summit Camp
A crucial day for acclimatization and skill-building. Trekkers practice using crampons and ice axes on snow. The “load ferry” exercise involves carrying supplies to a higher camp (Summit Camp at ~4,400m) and returning to sleep at the lower altitude of Lady Leg, aiding the body’s adaptation.
Day 5: Move to Summit Camp
The team shifts camp to the higher Summit Camp. This short move (2-3 hours) places the group in position for the summit attempt and allows for final rest and preparation at altitude.
Day 6: Summit Attempt (Friendship Peak) and Return to Lady Leg
Summit Day. A pre-dawn start (often around midnight) begins the technical climb on snow and ice, using ropes and all practiced skills. After 8-10+ hours of strenuous climbing, the summit (5,289m) is reached, offering spectacular panoramic views. The group then descends all the way back to Lady Leg Base Camp.
Day 7: Lady Leg to Dhundi (Trek) and Drive to Manali
The final descent retraces the path from Lady Leg to Dhundi (approx. 8 km, 4-5 hours). From Dhundi, a drive returns the group to Manali, where the expedition concludes
